Italy Day 9 - Part 2 by Godon, Duomo Florence, Crypt of Santa Reparata - Duomo

Duomo Florence, Crypt of Santa Reparata - Duomo

~ Gordon

It took us 1.5 hour bus ride to get back to Florence from Siena. When we arrived at Florence Duomo, it was 3 pm in the afternoon. Perfect time to line up to go into Florence Duomo, and take a look at its crypt. Be careful, duomo closes at 4 pm. So, hurry up! Crypt of Santa Reparata at Florence Duomo was very cool with a lot of mosaics on the floor. Along with that there are also some tombs of the medici family. At the entrance, we watched a movie about duomo’s history.

The duomo crypt is ancient. I found a tomb of John Medici there. Many mosaic decorates the floor. The mosaic is well protected behind the railing. You cannot step on them, rub them, touch them. There are also some small floor sculptures. There is a small movie to watch how the old cathedral was formed. It was proven that this used to be a cross church.

The interior of duomo was very impressive as we came out from the crypt. We looked at it for the final time before forcing out. It was 4 pm already. What will we do? We explored the duomo’s exteriors a lot more. The exterior walls are decorated like a huge white flower, with white marbles, green marbles, red marbles. People call it, Saint Mary of the Flower. It was so great to be here.

The duomo was beautiful, from the crypt to the dome. It was wonderful to see all the mosaics, and the statues. The mosaics felt like really cold skipping stones. I wish we could come here again.
