Italy Day 6 - Venice Day 2 by Gordon, St Mark Square, Murano, Burano
St Mark Square, Murano, Burano
~ Gordon
Venice day 2 was very nice. We had a great tour, which we learned a lot of history of Venice. There were some markets, buildings, and courts, and bridges at St. Mark’s Square. Other islands, like Murano and Burano are close by. It is about 20 minutes water bus to arrive at Murano, and about 50 minutes to reach Burano.
Saint Mark’s Square was huge. There are many buildings at the square, like the Doge’s Palace, the library, the basilica, and a lot more. There is a place for Napoleon. Napoleon once said that this place was the drawing room for Europe. There is a clock tower. It is really nice to walk around the square.
Saint Mark Basilica was very nice to see the inside. The dome and walls are decorated with gold mosaic, and a lot of other decorations. In an exhibit, a lot of special gemstones that are worth millions of dollars are behind the altar. We didn’t get to see it, though it sounded very pretty.
We had a great time in Venice, but to sum it up, we had a tour. We saw many things on the tour. Our tour started with a market. It was interesting to see all the fresh fish, fruits and vegetables over there. Many repeated street names are in Venice, so it would be easy to get lost. Lots of Venice mask stores are on the street. I like the paper-mache masks, traditional Venice masks.
Murano was famous for the glass products. It was even better to see an exhibit about glass at the Glass Factory. We saw glass being made by a factory! The process involved melting sand, using metals to shape up the hot sand, then reheating it, and BLOW, until the process is over. Then, it goes to the market for sale.
Burano was great for exploring all the colors, as people paint their houses every year. This small fishing village has many colors, like the rainbows. It was very vivid.
Venice was beautiful day and night. The Grand Canal was nice with many gondolas drifting on it along with many water bus and water taxi. Along with those, there also buses connect main island to mainland. Saint Mark’s Square is one of the most important squares in Venice for tourists. Murano’s glass was pretty nice with many colors and shapes, cute or grand. For sure, Burano had a lot of colors. I had a great time in Venice.
