Italy Day 2 - Rome Day 2 Part 1 by Gordon, Herculaneum 赫克兰尼姆

Herculaneum

~ Gordon

Mt. Vesuvius erupted in August 24, 79 AD. This powerful eruption covered Herculaneum for more than 1700 years, until early 18 century. It was buried underground 20 meters deep. My day at Herculaneum was pretty fun. The hall of Augustals was grand and beautiful, along with Thermopolium - the restaurants. Those restaurants were used in public events. Some buildings uncovered, but are still under preservation, like the School of Athens. Some are normal houses, bakeries, church, and temple.

There are barrel arches containing some bones as this was the boathouse most people were found. I guess everyone gathered here to wait for the boats coming back  to rescue them. The giant volcano eruption quickly covered the area, so bones left. This boathouse was connected to the beach at one point. It carries over 300 bone sets. Many people carried jewelries and gold while coming over to the boathouse, thus making anyone who robbed the boathouse rich. There was even a soldier who laid here with 2 swords, 1 scalpel.

In ancient rome, if you were a freed slave, you were called a liberta. Libertas becoming augustals meant for worshipping an emperor. Can you guess which one? If you guessed Augustus, you’re right! The roman forum had a little room where political, religious, and and commercial life took place for all augustals. There are 2 ruined frescoes that show the gods on the left and a war between Hercules and a king.

Thermopolium was for the public to cook hot food for events. It wasn’t customary to have lunch at home. It is basically a small table where you could cook your meals. It is about the size of a giant counter with around 5 stoves.

Herculaneum was nice to visit with a lot of fun places. The boathouse with over 300 bone sets was a big discover. The Hall of Augustals was for many worshippers. The Thermopolium was interesting. I was exploring a well preserved ancient Roman city!
