Italy Day 5 - Venice Day 1 by Aaron, Night at Grand Canal of Venice

Night at Grand Canal of Venice

~ Aaron

I had a great time my first night in Venice. I saw the awesome Saint Mark’s Square. The history of Venice is  very interesting. This was an excellent time in Venice.

Saint Mark’s Square contains the huge Saint Mark’s Basilica at its end. The church is huge, and was built in the 800s when the relics of Saint Mark were supposedly taken from Alexandria. Saint Mark’s Square is famous, because of the 2 pillars near its entrance/exit. On top of those pillars are winged lions, which are Saint Mark’s symbol and very famous. The four horses over the western side of the basilica also stand for all of Venice’s power and pride.

Venice was initially built for its strategic location next to the sea so it could be used as a port. Its power rose and declined as time passed. Eventually, it became the quiet city it is today. As global warming gets more severe, the sea levels in Venice are rising up and starting to cover buildings. Arguably one of the most famous people from Venice was Marco Polo, who became well-known because of The Travels of Marco Polo.

This was a great time in Venice. The Saint Mark’s Square was an awesome place to visit. There is a very ancient history behind Venice. This was a very promising night in Venice.
