Italy Day 6 - Venice Day 2 by Aaron, St Mark Square, Murano, Burano
St Mark Square, Murano, Burano

Tour of Venice, St Mark Square
Bridge of Sighs, Murano Glass Factory
I had a great time this day in Venice. The Saint Mark’s Basilica is very famous. The Grand Canal is one of the most important canals in Venice. Gondolas drift on the canals through all of Venice. The Bridge of Sighs is very famous. I participated in a tour of Venice. Murano and Burano were great places to visit. This is a fun place.
The Saint Mark’s Basilica is an extremely large church dedicated to Saint Mark. He was the writer of the Gospel of Mark. The basilica is one of the tallest churches in the world. There are over 500 columns in Saint Mark’s Basilica. Many of the mosaics in the basilica are gold!
The Bridge of Sighs was a bridge that criminals passed through to jail. It was also where criminals were moved from the jail for interrogation. Its name came from the belief that prisoners would sigh after their last look of Venice before going in the cells.
I had a fun time during the tour of Venice. I saw the farmer’s and fisher’s markets. There was a restriction on at least how long everything could be to sell it. The tour also explained why there are cisterns in Venice. We also learned that out of 30 doges in a period of time, only 8 died naturally.
Murano is famous for its glass. While in Murano, we saw a glass-blowing factory make glass. The process involved melting sand, stirring it and blowing it to make its shape, removing bubbles, and shaping the glass. Burano is well-known for the many colors of the houses. It may not be obvious, but the colors of each house are restricted. Burano also makes lace.
This was an awesome time in Venice. The Saint Mark’s Basilica has the body of Saint Mark and a gem-studded altarpiece. Gondolas and the Grand Canal are all special to Venice. The Bridge of Sighs gets its name very accurately. The tour I participated in of Venice was very informal. Murano and Burano were very beautiful. I wish I could have spent more time in Venice!
