Day 3 was really fun. Today was Culture Day, the last Wednesday of every month.
Free admission to all the temples and palaces along with the museums. Our visit
started from a gigantic shrine, Jongmyo Shrine. Jongmyo Shrine was built by the first king of
Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo. The shrine stands right beside 3 major palaces, Gyeongbok
Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Changgyeonggung Palace. They each had a lot
of history, at least 600 years. There is also a village houses some traditional
Korean houses, Bukchon Hanok Village. All these places are really
interesting.

The Jongmyo Shrine 宗庙 is really
old. It was built in 1394 for the dead kings and queens. It is so huge that
we walked around its outside wall for an hour, and cannot find the entrance. There is a path in the middle, and people cannot walk on it. Do you know
why? Because that walkway was created for the spirits to walk across.

There are Five Grand Palaces
built in the Korean Joseon Dynasty, Gyeongbokgung 景福宫, Changdeokgung 昌德宫, Changgyeonggung 昌庆宫,
Deoksugung 德寿宫, and Gyeonghuigung 庆熙宫. Changdeokgung Palace, built in 1405, by King
Taejong, is one of them. Kings prefered to visit Changdeokgung, because of its beautiful
Secret Garden. Changdeokgung is very closed by another palace,
Changgyeonggung. Both palaces are referred as the “Eastern Palaces”.

Changgyeonggung 昌庆宫 was
also a royal palace for the kings. Changgyeonggung was built by King Sejong
around 1450 due to royal family expansion. These 3 palaces are all meant to
house kings. Gyeongbokgung was the first palace built by the first king of
Joseon Dynasty. 10 years later, the second palace Changdeokgung was built by
the third king. And the third palace Changgyeonggung was built by the Great King
Sejong, the fourth king. The 3 palaces connect with each other through gates.
They are really ancient, and amazing.
