Taipei Day 2, Taipei Zoo, National Palace Museum |
In Taiwan, I had a lot of fun but the most fun I had was in Taipei. Tamsui Old Street and Shilin Night Market's delicious food was unforgettable. We visited the National Palace Museum, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Shilin Presidential Office Building, and Presidential Residence. The great architecture of Taipei 101 makes it one of the top landmark of Taipei.
National Concert Hall at the Freedom Square |
The first place we went to was the Freedom Square. In the Freedom Square, we saw a concert hall and an opera house that looks like a palace. It sure was a sad thing that we could not enter the concert hall, but it was a good thing that we could enter the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. At the end of the memorial hall, there was an explanation. It said that memorial had 89 steps which stands for the 89 years of Chiang Kai-shek. There was a guard changing ceremony every hour. Pretty soon, we heard a few stomps and then we ran up all the way to the top. It turned out that those stomps were the guards changing in the ceremony. Take a look up at the ceiling. It’s a picture of the Taiwan flag. It is a red flag but the left top corner is a blue sky with a white sun. Inside the memorial hall lies a statue of Chiang Kai-Shek. He was famous and the first president in Taiwan. The three principles, science, democracy, and ethics (科学, 民主, 理论), are carved into the wall.
The next place we saw was the Presidential Office Building(總統府). It is as famous as the white house because the president lives and works there which is the same thing as the white house. It used to be the house of the Governor-general of Taiwan. At that time, it was controlled by the Japanese so it was harmed in World War II. The building was rebuilt in Baroque style.
Taipei 101 (台北101 )is very popular. Towering above the sky makes it hard to miss. Do you know why it is called Taipei 101? It has 101 floors. I call it - the world's greenest building. The tower looks like lots of cubes stacked on top of each other. It survived from a very strong hurricane. Everybody thought it was wrecked by the time the hurricane ended. People figured out that it still stood nice and straight, like it never got harmed.
Taipei Zoo was very fun. We saw a 3 year old panda named Yuan Zai. It was very energetic. Look at the model panda… with a rat? No, that's not a rat. That’s a model panda baby. Other than that we saw real penguins, awesome birds and super snakes.
Beitou Public Library was gigantic and beautiful. It was very nice library with great structure. The library was peaceful and a good place to relax and rest. This Library is not only for local uses, but also for tourists. I spotted an orange Harry Potter book in Japanese. Even though I could not read it, I still consider it as my favorite library.
Here we go, the National Palace Museum. It contains a huge collection of ancient China's artifacts and artworks. You may find 700,000 pieces of them. The collection covers Chinese history for over 10,000 years from Neolithic Age to the late Qing Dynasty. A jade cabbage, jade pork belly, and a jade screen door were the most interesting things in the museum.
At Tamsui Old Street, we bought tasty red bean and custard pancakes. The octopus balls were yummy too.
The sunset of Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf was breathtaking. Jogging along the boardwalk was good exercise.
The scrumptious food and lots of night markets attracted us. We chose to go to the most popular one, Shilin Night Market. The fried chicken pieces are bigger than my face. Snow cones are very yummy. Now you know about my Taipei adventure!
