The Silk Road
Silk Road Day 1:
Lanzhou

The Lanzhou Bridge, the 'first' bridge over the Yellow River
Lanzhou is a very awesome place. We went to this place to trace the route of the Silk Road. Although the starting point is Xi’an, we went there last time, so we chose other places. The Yellow River passes through this area under the famous Zhongshan Bridge. Its night market contains many delicious foods.

On the Zhongshan Bridge

A stone marking the 100th anniversary of the bridge
Do you know what the first bridge over the Yellow River is? The Zhongshan Bridge! It was the first iron bridge over the Yellow River (finished in 1909). Many floating ‘bridges’ were built before this bridge, but they were all ships tied together. Zhongshan Bridge ‘retired’ in 1989, so now only people can go on the bridge, not cars. It just celebrated its 100th anniversary a few years ago. The Yellow River is the mother river of China. Places along the river were often well developed.

牛奶鸡蛋醪糟
Spicy lamb kabob
The Lanzhou night market had tasty food. We drank a mixture of milk, eggs, and fermented glutinous rice (牛奶鸡蛋醪糟). It was so good we drank it again on the way back to our hotel. Our meal also included some spicy lamb kabobs.

Lanzhou has many fun places to go. The Yellow River viewed from the Zhongshan Bridge is beautiful. A lot of scrumptious food was inside the Lanzhou night market. This city has many interesting things.
