We took flight from Shanghai to Lanzhou. Our Silk Road adventure started right here at Lanzhou. Even Xi'An was the starting point of the Silk Road, but we visited there two years ago. Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, was an important city of the Silk Road. This made us chose Lanzhou to begun our Big West journey.

Lanzhou is a very fun city with full of history. It has the Zhongshan Bridge, the first bridge built across the rushing Yellow River.

Zhongshan Bridge
100 year old memorial
The first place we went to was the Zhongshan Bridge. It used to be a floating bridge that was unstable and not firm. More than 20 boats tied up together by ropes and chains to form the floating bridge. It was easily damaged always. People walking on the bridge was not safe. Later, there were many arguments about whether or not to get a new kind of bridge. In 1909, the arguments were over and guess what? Qing government built this iron bridge, Zhongshan Bridge. The bridge was named to commemorate of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Dr. Sun Zhongshan). There is no need to worry about flooding the bridge anymore. It stands across the Yellow River, tall and beautiful, for over 100 years! The bridge looks pretty at night with all the decoration lights on. It is one of the best places to view Yellow River.

The thing we ate for dinner was yummy fried noodle, and a delicious mixture of milk, egg, and fermented glutinous rice (牛奶鸡蛋醪糟). Now, the best for the last, the lamb kabobs. It was full of flavor. I think every one will love it.

I love the history of Lanzhou. Let's see what is better in the rest of our amazing trip. My opinion would be that it is the best place for relaxing.
