Oakland - U.S.S. Hornet Museum by Gordon

U.S.S. Hornet Museum

The USS Hornet Museum

USS Hornet
USS Hornet is a very old retired Aircraft Carrier with a lot of protective boats around. Airplanes were launched and also landed at there. Many kinds of planes find their last stop there. Why not go check it out?

The runaway

TBM-3 Avenger plane
There are many airplanes like the TBM-3 Avenger plane and many others. TBM-3 Avenger planes carry very heavy bombs. On the Pearl Harbor attack, a plane called Avenger landed a bomb. The Avenger could go at the speed of  267 M.P.H. That is very fast. They even have the real TBM-3 Avenger plane, not a model. They can have any color they want but there's one thing you can't change. The shape of the plane. They're all the same shape which allows them to go at high speed.

Watching a video about
the Apollo landing
USS Hornet  is known for picking up Apollo 11 and 12. Apollo 11 and 12 landed in the ocean water. The USS Hornet sent an airplane that used a net to catch up all the crew members to safety. If you want to know more, you can go there and watch a relaxing video about the Apollo landing.

The aircraft simulator
There was an aircraft simulator. It had single ride and double ride. The scenes were both different so don't worry if it's repeated. The seats are very comfy so all you need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the view. You get shook so if you feel sick you shouldn't go out. Just close your eyes until it stops.

USS Hornet is filled with things, good or fun. I think everything is very good. Airplanes are well preserved. They give you spot to rest and explore. USS Hornet is awesome!

USS Hornet, a retired aircraft carrier

The aircraft on the ship
The U.S.S. Hornet Museum is full of interesting facts. It was an actual aircraft carrier at one point! Apollo 11 and 12 both landed on the U.S.S. Hornet. We rode a flight simulator in the museum too.

The General Motors TBM-3 Avenger Torpedo Bomber
U.S.S. Hornet Museum is a very large aircraft carrier with many things to do and see. The flight deck is full of many aircraft like the General Motors TBM-3 Avenger Torpedo Bomber and many others. Its inside was very fun. We also saw the dining room, rifles, and played a game. A model of the first successful stop on an aircraft carrier is found inside the ship too. Unfortunately, the pilot died barely a few months and a day later. His plane crashed, but he jumped back onto the ship and got a broken neck.

Our tour guide

Capsule CM-011A
This museum has the largest collection of artifacts from Apollo missions in the whole West Coast! I think it’s because the U.S.S. Hornet was picked to pick up the crew of Apollo 11 & 12. It still has a model of the helicopter that picked up Apollo crew members. Unluckily, the original crashed into a few hundred feet of water 6 years later. The model is the exact same copter who recovered the Gemini 4 crew, another spaceship mission.

The main reason of the Apollo missions was to go to the moon. Out of the 3 members in Apollo 11, only 2 actually stepped on the moon. The other person stayed inside the moon orbit to watch over the ship. Neil Armstrong became the first person on the moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin a few seconds later! Many people know Armstrong's famous words, "One small step for man, one huge step for mankind."

Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King BuNo. 148999, the rescuer of the Gemini 4 crew

The U.S.S. Hornet is an awesome place. This wonderful aircraft carrier can contain many new things to do. U.S.S. Hornet is mainly known for carrying the first successful moon landing crew. We saw what it was like to ride a fighter plane during a war in the flight simulator, even with the shaking and turning. I want to visit this museum again very soon.

Today was the grand day we were waiting for. On the morning at 6:00 am, we woke up and rushed to Redwood National Park. Redwood National Park was a good place with many redwood trees. They can go very old and are so wide. The most famous one is on a street called "The Avenue of the Giants". If you don't know where it is, just say "Myers Flat". Its age is 3000 and it is still living. It is hard to get burnt because the redwood trees contain a chemical that prevents fire. The redwood grow roots on one side and branches on the other side so it becomes balanced. It is so wide but it is a sad thing that 7 x 7 cars don't fit in there.

Carson Mansion
The 130 year old Carson Mansion at Eureka was a very fun part of our journey. It is very pretty and big so it became the biggest mansion in the Victorian style across North America. It had become a private club called the Ingomar Club. It was also the first few times we played a game called Pokemon Go. I caught something that my brother doesn't have.

Crab shells

A shell
We went to a beach. The black sand was hot. We found many interesting things. That includes crab shells and in the end I found a shell. The shell had a hole at the top.

The wizard Island

The Phantom Ship

Crater Lake is full of blue water and green trees. From every overlook you can see the islands on Crater Lake like the Phantom Ship or the Wizard Island. Those are just the two islands which can be seen above the water. There may be some that have been sunken down. Phantom Ship was said to be a pirate ship that was sunken by ghosts protecting the lake. The Wizard Island may be called so because if it had its top, it would look like a wizard hat. There are boat tours that go to Wizard Island, but only during the summer.

Mt. Shasta Vista Point

Mount Shasta is a volcano. But It is also  a very high volcano. Mount  Shasta has a mountain nearby known as Shastina Cone. The most recent eruption was very big and was seen from the Pacific Ocean. Mount Shasta is so high it even has glaciers on it. It is the highest mountain in California.
