Yellowstone Park - Mammoth Hot Springs of Yellowstone

Mammoth Hot Springs

the world-famous Mammoth Hot Spring
-- Aaron
Welcome to the famous Yellowstone landmark: Mammoth Hot Springs. Back Basin and Porcelain Basin make up the Norris Geyser Basin, home to the tallest geyser in the world! We also saw the cool Golden Gate (not Gordon Gate) and Gibbon Falls. The amazing Mammoth Hot Springs has many long paths around the mountain. A place of excitement is Mammoth Hot Springs.

Yellowstone's tallest geyser
Steamboat Geyser
Norris Geyser Basin is fun. The many geysers there include the tallest geyser in Yellowstone. Can you guess its name? Steamboat Geyser has major eruptions which can be over 300 feet tall. Most people don't get a chance to see a major eruption because they can range from 4 days to 50 years apart! Some other features in Back Basin are called Cistern Spring, connected to Steamboat Geyser, Minute Geyser, which was clogged by coins that early travelers threw in, Echinus Geyser as acidic as vinegar, Porkchop Geyser that doesn't erupt that often, Emerald Spring with water so hot that only the most extreme thermophiles (heat-loving organisms) can survive, and Puff 'n Stuff Geyser that often sprays water a few feet tall. Some hydrothermal features in Porcelain Basin, the other basin in Norris Geyser Basin, are called Constant Geyser, which erupts every few minutes to several hours, Whirligig Geyser with a sound that can be heard all around the Norris Geyser Basin, the sweet Black Growler Steam Vent, and Whale's Mouth (currently a quiet spring). Norris Geyser Basin has lots  of excellent stuff.

Gibbon Falls
Golden Gate
On the way to Mammoth Hot Springs, we stopped at 2 wonderful spots. Gibbon Falls is 84 feet tall, easy to take a picture of, and very beautiful. The Golden Gate over the Golden Gate Canyon has over 100 years of history. It was first made of wood, but since heavy stagecoaches crossed the unstable bridge in the 1880s every day with a chance of falling off, then it was continuously repaired with newer materials and engineering in 1900, 1933, and 1977 until it became what the bridge over the Golden Gate Canyon now. Golden Gate and Gibbon Falls were awesome.

Has Mammoth Hot Springs' water
dried up? The answer is no!
colorful terraces of
Mammoth Hot Springs
Now, what we have been waiting for: the world-famous Mammoth Hot Springs. Here's a true but weird fact: inactive terraces are under the surface all around the area, which means wherever you step in Mammoth Hot Springs, you're likely to be stepping on terraces! Be sure to bring lots of water. You may have to do a lot of hiking around on the mountain where limestone happens to be the main rock, not rhyolite (a volcanic rock commonly found in Yellowstone). Don't touch the Mammoth Hot Spring water because 163 Fahrenheit can cause burns on your hand. Even though it may seem that the water has gone, Mammoth Hot Springs actually will not dry up. The reason: Mammoth Hot Springs actually constantly changes, sometimes overnight. Earthquakes cause most of these changes. Some examples of the changes are old springs reopening, new springs forming, or active springs drying. One of the world's best protected places with examples of travertine-depositing hot springs is Mammoth Hot Springs. Mammoth Hot Springs has very beautiful things, even if you catch one of the few times when almost no water can be found.

I would call Mammoth Hot Springs the most excellent place in Yellowstone. Norris Geyser Basin has lots of wonderful things in Back Basin and Porcelain Basin. Gibbon Falls and Golden Gate over the Golden Gate Canyon are all very pretty. Mammoth Hot Springs offers a good view of things and keeps you exercise. The coolest place in Yellowstone is Mammoth Hot Springs.

colorful hot spring in Norris
Geyser Basin
Welcome to Norris Geyser Basin, where lots of amazing things live. Fumaroles, magnificent plants, and colorful hot springs are everywhere. Fumaroles' water is hotter than geysers'. It is so hot that water directly becomes steam. Steamboat, the world's tallest unpredictable active geyser, is great! Steamboat Geyser is 350 feet tall when erupted, much taller than the famous Old faithful (water shot up to 200 feet tall) !!! Imagine that!!!
Norris Geyser Basin is a perfect habitat for extremophiles - heat loving organisms.

At last, the amazing Yellowstone landmark, Mammoth Hot Spring. Water is colored by algae. Mammoth Hot Springs is wonderful! Liberty cap was formed by a hot spring. Mound terrace is GREAT!!! Jupiter terrace is so hot that trees were burnt. A Cascading flow from a new vent at Canary shaped the terraced hillside in 2014!
Everything is wonderful, but Mammoth Hot Spring is the BEST OF ALL!!!
