We went to many wonderful places in Seattle. Did you know this city is a city built on top of another city? In the Great Fire of 1889, Seattle was burnt down. However, people got tired of waiting for insurance, so they just built a city on top of it! The old Seattle is still accessible for people who take the underground tour in Pioneer Square. Seattle is a city by the sea. People also fish for seafood here at the harbor. This bucket is full of what sea animal? The answer is squid, but the only part you can see is the eyes! The attractions here are all very interesting and most are full of history.

Seattle only became as populated as it is now in the Alaskan Gold Rush when people boarded ships in Seattle and San Francisco to reach Alaska. 3 people had found gold along the Klondike river in Alaska, and news had traveled slowly. One day, miners in Alaska returned to the U.S. carrying more than a ton of gold in their ship. A crowd of 5,000 people crowded around to see the gold in the cargo and saw lots of it. People suddenly wanted to go to Alaska too, but they had to carry a ton of goods per person to be able to get in, which they got from shops in Seattle. Seattle’s population gradually rose, and it eventually became the Seattle we know now.

Our first stop was the exciting Olympic Sculpture Park. The park is a 9 acre outdoor sculpture museum and beach. It once belonged to an oil and gas company, so it was a dirty field at the time. The Seattle Art Museum proposed to transform it into one of the few green places in Seattle. The red Eagle made of painted steel, by Alexander Calder, is right by the entrance. Many statues of what looks like a lamp are situated by the coast of the park. A giant face looks across the park near the place where we left. A fountain surrounds the bottom of a stone child holding his hands out towards a much larger fountain completely surrounding an adult. This park is full of many nice sculptures.

We visited the old and popular Pike Place Market and the gross Bubblegum Wall. The market was built in August 17, 1907 and is one of the oldest still running farmers market today! It is also the 33rd most popular tourist attraction in the whole world with over 10 million visitors an year. The very first Starbucks is right here in the Pike Place Market. Many people come to the Starbucks just to buy a coffee. It is hard to miss if you want to find it. Look how long the waiting line is. Fresh bouquets and seafood are on sale across the market. There is one famous corner of the market where a person throws fish to the chef in front of a crowd, which are then filleted. People enjoy listening to them sing and yell when they throw and catch the fish. The most interesting item on sale in the market (in my opinion) was the elephant garlic, which looked to be about the size of a softball. The Bubblegum Wall is right beside the market, and its name describes it. It was covered in gum, and we were told the walls were all cleaned 4 months ago! It was full of awesome designs.

The famous Space Needle is very tall and gives a fantastic view of Seattle from its top. It was built for the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle, where 2.3 million visitors came and close to 20,000 people used its elevators daily. It all started on a sleepless night when a Seattle businessman named Eddie Carlson drew a circle on a stick and wrote the words Space Needle under it. Some ideas included the shape of a bagel on a stick, others were a landed UFO on a water display, and still more thought it should have a planetarium on the top. Finally, the design was decided. It would have a tripod base, hour-glass shape, and a revolving restaurant. The elevator upwards showed all of Seattle, which means the elevator went very high up. We even got some pictures of ourselves up in the sky. This is an excellent place to visit.

Ferry ride
Along with these interesting places, we also visited 2 islands by ferry, Bainbridge Island and Bremerton Island. They both were supposed to be very fabulous, but we were forced to walk around only a bit before turning back to ride the ferry back. On Bainbridge Island, we came when the sky was starting to darken. We walked around and saw the downtown Bainbridge Island. In Bremerton, it was raining so hard we couldn’t even get out from under the overhang, so we decided to head back. Before turning around, we saw the Harborside Fountain Park with its fountains and landscapes. I’d really like to visit these 2 islands again to see what they’re actually like.

I love this visit to Seattle, even though it rained all day long. The city is very beautiful and full of exciting things to visit. This was an amazing trip.
